唐远炎教授被评选为国际电子与电机工程协会院士(IEEE Fellow)和国际模式识别协会院士(IAPR Fellow)。兼任中国电子学会信号处理学会委员,香港浸会大学计算机科学系讲座教授。
2005年中科院院士增选信息技术科学部有效候选人之一。有二十余篇发表于国际权威的 IEEE期刊上,例如本领域SCI影响因子最高的IEEE Trans PAMI 等。其中80篇被SCI收录,92篇被EI收录。研究成果产生了重要的、广泛的影响,已被国内外同行专家学者大量引用,SCI他引多达184次,得到了国际权威专家在国际著名IEEE期刊中SCI影响因子最大的IEEE Trans PAMI等刊物上的多次引用和充分肯定。唐远炎教授创办了首本(也是唯一的一本)有关小波分析理论及其应用的国际刊物(International Journal of Wavelets,Multiresolution and Information Processing) 并担任主编。2005年起IJWMIP已成为SCI检索期刊源。因其在小波分析、模式识别以及文本分析和识别诸方面所做出的杰出贡献。在2002年国际模式识别大会上,唐远炎教授带领的申办小组以他们在国际上的学术成就赢得来自全世界九十多个国家的专家的支持和认可,首次为中国成功申办了2006年国际模式识别大会(在香港特区举行)---国际模式识别领域这一象征最高荣誉的国际学术会议(ICPR),并担任主席,特区政府前特首董建华先生亲自发信表示支持(亚洲仅有日本举办过)。
